Glacia OS
Reimagining the Classic Desktop for Modern Users
"A thoughtful, privacy-respecting desktop that brings back what mattered—refined for today."
Why Glacia OS Exists
I built Glacia OS because I believe the best ideas in desktop computing shouldn’t be lost to time. Over the years, many elegant and powerful features have disappeared, not because they were flawed, but because trends shifted. Glacia OS revives and rethinks those concepts with modern principles:
- The Global Menu: Clean, space-efficient, and always accessible, menus belong at the top, not duplicated in every window.
- Visible Window Controls: Real closing, minimizing, and maximizing buttons, no hidden gestures or ambiguous UI.
- The HUD (Heads-Up Display): Instant access to application menus via keyboard. Productivity without taking your hands off the keys.
- Consistent System Configuration: No more digging through disconnected tools or editing config files as a “power user.” Your system should be yours—intuitively.
Glacia OS isn’t nostalgia, it’s evolution.
What’s Already Built
Glacia OS is not a concept, it’s a working, daily-driver-ready system built on clarity, privacy, and developer empathy:
- Private, Focused Launcher:
Removed all remote RPC calls and scopes. Press Super to see only your installed apps, with larger icons and smarter, faster local search. - Unified Control Center:
Replaced fragmented settings with a single, cohesive Glacia Control Center, merging all options from legacy tools into one intuitive interface. - Developer-Ready File Manager:
Added a one-click “Open in Editor” button in Nemo to launch your current folder in VS Code, Sublime, or your preferred IDE. - Open Development Pipeline:
All code lives on Glacia GitLab with full CI/CD, automatically building Debian packages and bootable ISOs for every commit.
What’s Next
Glacia OS is just getting started. Here’s our roadmap to make it the most coherent, powerful, and user-respecting desktop environment:
- Modernized System Indicators:
Refresh core indicators (calendar, sound, power) with clean visuals, better i18n, and deeper integration, without bloat. - Iceberg DE: X11 + Wayland Ready:
Refactor our desktop environment (formerly Unity) to run natively on both X11 and Wayland, ensuring longevity and compatibility. - Networking GUI:
With advanced network setups (VETH, VLANs, etc..) and the long missing IP Tables GUI. - Per-Process DNS Auditing:
Monitor and restrict DNS requests by application, with customizable blacklists, because privacy starts at the network layer.
Join the Vision
Glacia OS is more than a distribution, it’s a statement:
Desktop computing can be elegant, efficient, and respectful of your time and privacy.
All development happens in the open. All decisions are made with users in mind. All code is yours to use, improve, and trust.
